The character of the nun, while performed admirably by newcomer Agata Buzek, really complicates the story. After he hurriedly tears the poster off the wall, he sees a tunnel—the tunnel Andy had been digging for more than 20 years of his imprisonment with the help of a small rock ax. The film is further harmed by Joey's love interest, who just happens to be a nun. However, as it becomes clearer, he does this to persevere rather than not giving in. He cleans himself up, puts on nice clothes and tells neighbors he's a houseguest.
Freeman creates an endearing portrait of a decent man with a dark deed in his past, and Tim Robbins gives what may be his most accomplished portrayal. He will not back down.
